Auto Insurance Basics to Know Before You Get Your First Policy

Getting your first auto insurance policy can be exciting since it probably means you’re just now getting your first car or your ability to drive. Working with an industry professional at Atlantis Insurance Inc. servicing West Palm Beach, FL can help.

We’re happy to give you the information you need to find the right auto policy. Below are a few things that can help you as you shop for your first car and get your first license.

Auto Insurance Is Required to Drive Off the Lot

If you’re buying a car, you’ll need a policy to drive that car off the dealership lot. You can buy a vehicle before getting an insurance policy, but you’ll need proof of insurance before the dealer provides you with keys. Many dealerships will allow you to show digital proof of your insurance, or you can have your insurance company fax the policy to you at the dealership.

Full Coverage Is Required If You’re Getting a Loan

If you’re getting an auto loan, the bank will most likely require you to get full coverage for the vehicle. This helps protect the bank if you get in an accident before the loan is paid off. When the loan is paid off, you can change your coverage to a liability-only policy if that is your preference.

Liability Insurance Is a Legal Requirement for Driving

Even if you aren’t required to get a full coverage policy, you will need to have liability insurance to drive on the roads. This is a requirement by law.

Can My Auto Insurance Rate Increase For An Accident That Was Not My Fault?

At Atlantis Insurance Inc., providing residents in the greater West Palm Beach, FL area with auto insurance, one of the questions that we are frequently asked is whether a car insurance company can increase rates for an accident that you were involved in but were not at fault for.

Can My Auto Insurance Rate Increase For An Accident That Was Not My Fault?

Your insurance company will base your premiums on many factors. As such, they may decide to increase your rate, even if an accident was not your fault based on:

Previous Claims or Driving History

While the specific accident may not be your fault, if you have a history of filing multiple claims or have a poor driving record, including traffic violations or previous accidents, your insurance rate could be affected. Insurance companies consider your overall risk profile when determining premiums, so a history of accidents or claims could still result in rate adjustments.

No-Fault States

In some states with no-fault insurance systems, each driver’s insurance company is responsible for covering their own policyholder’s damages, regardless of fault. In these cases, your insurance rate might increase due to the overall claim costs and expenses associated with the accident, even if you were not at fault.

Policy Conditions

Your insurance policy may contain specific conditions or clauses that allow for rate adjustments, regardless of fault. It’s essential to review your policy to understand the terms and conditions related to rate adjustments and accident forgiveness.

Reasons You Need Auto Insurance

Many people try to save as much money as they possibly can. They look at where they are spending money and look for ways to cut back. One thing that they may be thinking about is getting rid of their automobile insurance. However, that could be a big mistake. Consult with us at Atlantis Insurance Inc. in West Palm Beach, FL to learn more about your options.

Here are some reasons that you need to have auto insurance:

It is the law

Most states require you to have some sort of auto insurance before you get behind the wheel. If you get pulled over without insurance, you could be in trouble.

If you are at fault, it will help pay for the damage to their vehicle, as well as their medical bills

Since most people are unable to pay for vehicle damages and medical bills, your insurance company will pay for you.

It will also pay for property damage

If you damage a fence or shed, your insurance will help to cover these costs.

If you aren’t at fault, you want to hope that the other person has insurance

You are going to rely on their insurance company to cover the damage to your vehicle, as well as your medical bills.

Your lender may require it

Many lenders want to make sure that they are protected, so they require a certain amount of insurance for a vehicle. They just want to make sure that it will be fixed if something happens.

You should have insurance because your state requires it. Your lender may also require it. However, it can also save you from expensive bills if you are at fault for an accident.

Required Auto Insurance in Florida

In Florida, there are specific auto insurance laws that pertain to Florida drivers and car owners. There are two types of coverage that are required by law, and there are several others that are highly recommended for drivers though not required by law. If you need auto coverage, contact us today at Atlantis Insurance Inc. in West Palm Beach, FL.

Personal Injury Protection

Florida is considered to be a no-fault state. That means that each driver must have their own personal injury protection policy. This policy has a set amount that is allowed for medical bills after an accident. The amount required by the state is fairly low, though, and a serious accident would cost more than the minimum required amount. It’s recommended that you raise the amount you are covered for.

Liability Coverage

There is a low amount required for property damage liability. This is coverage for the driver of the other vehicle if you were responsible for the accident. This coverage pays for the damage that your vehicle causes to theirs. The amount required is low, however, and raising it can help you to meet those charges if and when the day comes.

In Florida, there is no amount required for bodily injury liability. The state relies on personal injury protection coverage to take care of injuries and so does not make bodily injury liability coverage required. However, your medical bills after an accident can easily outstrip your personal injury protection. That’s why it’s a good idea to add bodily injury liability to your policy. If you were to be at fault for an accident in which someone was injured, and they used all of their personal injury protection, you could be sued for the rest. If you have this liability coverage, the policy would pay toward that overage.

What auto insurance is required in Florida

When you own a car, it comes with some responsibilities to carry auto insurance. What exactly those responsibilities depend on the state you live in. Insurance requirements are determined on a state level, so if you move, never assume the requirements you had in your previous state are the requirement in the state you have moved to. At Atlantis Insurance Inc. in West Palm Beach, FL, we have decades of experience, and we make sure our customers know the Florida auto insurance requirements and are in compliance.

Florida is a no-fault state. This adds another dimension to required auto insurance. The required coverage is PIP (Personal Injury Protection) and PDL (Property Damage Liability). PIP coverage protects you personally in the event of an accident, and it doesn’t matter who is at fault. Keep this in mind when determining what amount you feel comfortable with. PDL pays for damage caused by you to someone else’s property. Florida residents require these two insurances before they can register a vehicle with four wheels.

The minimum amount of PIP you must carry is $10,000. Keep in mind this insurance only pays 80% of any injuries, so you would still be responsible for $2,000. PDL coverage must also be a minimum of $10,000. Before you accept this as reasonable, consider the average cost of auto repairs or replacement, especially if it is a newer vehicle you damage. You must maintain this coverage even if your vehicle is stored and not being driven or inoperable. Failure to do this could result in your driving privilege and your registration being suspended for as much as three years, and you could be fined up to $500 to reinstate your driver’s license or registration.
